Dear Students,

We welcome you to the Module 3. It is great that you have completed the Module 1 [Pastures and Grasslands] and Module 2 [Transhumance and Pastoralism]. Module 3 encompasses “Rangeland Governance and Policies”, which consists of 6 units as under:

  • Unit 3.1: Problems and Issues Challenging the Rangelands and Pastoralism
  • Unit 3.2: Enclosure, Fragmentation and Conversion of Rangelands
  • Unit 3.3: Governance of Pastures and Grasslands: Role of Local Institutions
  • Unit 3.4: Improving Governance of Pastoral Lands
  • Unit 3.5: EU Common Agriculture Policy and Rangeland Governance
  • Unit 3.6: World Movements and Rangelands Governance

We hope you will enjoy reading and attending this Module 3. It is designed in a way that you will switch over to the pastureland issues from the imperative phenomenon of pastoralism and livestock mobility. From a common sense, we can quickly correlate the importance of rangeland pastures, since the domestic animals need grazing resources and those resources exist in rangeland pastures. So, to sustain and survive the livestock economy, not only the ecological health of rangelands is essential, herders’ access to such pasturelands is equally critical. Governance, polices and laws – international, national and sub-national – form a base for such accessibility and availability. We will deal with governance and policies regulating the rangeland pastures in international and national contexts in this Module 3.
