About
Nusrat Yaqoob is a technical and strategic program design expert and international researcher specializing in the water-climate nexus. She holds a PhD in Economics with a focus on Water Resource Management from the University of Karachi and serves as an expert member of the UNFCCC roster. Her professional background includes significant roles with the World Bank, FAO, and WaterAid, where she has focused on climate adaptation frameworks, water governance, and the sustainability of agricultural practices in South Asia.
She served as the Advocacy Coordinator for WaterAid in Sindh and Balochistan (2023–2025), and has been instrumental in developing 5-year strategic plans and designing climate-resilient WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) models, such as the Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) project. Her previous experience includes serving as a Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Research Officer for the World Bank’s Karachi Neighborhood Improvement Project (KNIP), a Research Assistant at the State Bank of Pakistan, and a consultant for organizations such as the FAO and UNICEF. Currently, she is working as a project lead at the Institute of Historical and Social Research Centre at Sohail University. Apart from this, she serves as a Belmont Forum ALP leadership program reviewer.
Nusrat's doctoral research at the University of Karachi focused on the education and academic aspects of transboundary water conflicts in the Indus River Basin and their impact on provincial water distribution. She also holds an M.Phil. in Applied Economics, where she researched technological advancement and crop productivity. Her academic work frequently explores the intersections of energy, food, water, and population pressure, particularly within the context of the Global South.
International Recognition and Appointments Nusrat is a recognized leader in international water policy, having served as the Newsletter Chair for UNESCO-GWYN (2021–2024) and as a member of the International Water Resources Association (IWRA) task force. She has received several accolades, including the Young Scientist Award (2022) from the Asia Pacific Network (APN) and the IAHR Young Professional Water Supply Challenge Award. Additionally, she has served as a Global Climate Ambassador for the World Bank, educating youth on climate resilience and public awareness.
Core Expertise: her technical skillset includes proficiency in the WEAP (Water Evaluation and Planning) model, GIS data handling, and statistical software such as Stata and E-Views. Nusrat is an expert in carbon financing, environmental governance, and transboundary water cooperation. She has authored numerous research papers and policy briefs focused on sustainable agriculture, irrigation practices, and the socio-economic factors influencing water use efficiency.
