About
Sabina Khatri is the Executive Director and the Senior Hydrogeologist of the Innovative
Initiative International (III), a research-based non-profit in Kathmandu, Nepal. Before joining this role, she was a Visiting Scholar at the United Nations University-FLORES, Dresden, Germany with the Alexander von Humboldt International Climate Fellowship 2022-23.
She also served as a Civil Servant (Hydrogeologist) for 5 years 5 months at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Nepal. Apart from this, she has worked in two different projects at the GIZ (German International Cooperation), namely, NEEP (Nepal Energy Efficiency Project) and ILRA (Improvement of Livelihood in Rural Areas) for Nepal.
She has also worked as a Consultant to the UNOPS, DFID (2017) and UN Women (2022-23) as a Geologist and Water Expert, respectively, for Nepal. Besides that, she worked as a Regional Consultant to the Global Water Partnership, (2021) South Asia.
Apart from that, she has also worked as part-time lecturer in different institutions like
Hillside Engineering College and SCHEMES College, in Kathmandu, Nepal (2016-2017).
She is very keen on outreach activities and science communication. She is the proposer of the National Chapter of the UNESCO- OWSD (The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World) for Nepal and was a founding member in 2020. Likewise, she was also a Keynote Speaker at UNESCO Water Resilience Challenge, September 2022 Indonesia and Vietnam. She also led the Project Coordination Committee at the UNESCO Groundwater Youth Network (GWYN), 2022-24. She is also a volunteer at the Ground Water Project 2020 onwards.
Apart from above, she has actively engaged in water related outreach activities like UN
Water Conference 2023 and SIWI World Water Week (WWW) 2022 and 2023, Stockholm,
Sweden. Likewise, her outreach spans from coordinating women scientists for the episode in National Television of Nepal (2020) to working as a Producer to the Podcast ‘The Earthlings’ USA, 2023, as well as her independent podcast ‘Let’s talk Science’ 2017. She also went around schools towards science sensitization, especially girls' schools in Nepal. She also authored an article on Science Diplomacy, in a national daily (2018) Nepal.
She has also been proactive in solving water and gender issues through her independent projects like Project ‘Empowering Mountain Communities through Fog Harvesting for Sustainable Water Management in Nepal’ 2024-2026; ‘Indigenous Women’s Knowledge and Perception on Climate Action’ on Climate Change and Gender with UN Women Nepal, 2024; Rainwater harvesting project, as a Co-PI, in water deprived Palapu, Okhaldhunga,Nepal funded by SSPF German Embassy Nepal 2022-23 and as a Co-PI to Water-induced Migration in Nepal funded by SANDEE-ICIMOD, 2020-2023. She also contributed in the project named "Capacity-building and strengthening of Livestock Production System while Adapting to Climate Change in Nepal (SLPS)" -2012 for the University of Louisiana, USA, through her engagement in the US-based think-tank namely, Asta-Ja.
Lastly, she has also received various awards and honors, few including Beahrs
Environmental Leadership Program, University of California, Berkeley 2025;The World
Bank, Max-Thabiso Edkins Climate Ambassador 2023; Best Performer, Science Diplomacy South Asia, Global Young Academy, Germany 2020; DAAD Young Ambassador 2018-2020.
