As someone working on range management in Sudan, I find it particularly valuable to learn about experiences from other parts of the world, especially in regions where pastoralism is a cornerstone of livelihoods 19:00:32 From Ute Schneiderat : I saw something related to support of alternative livelihoods to reduce pressure form pasture or rangelands. What are the ideas behind it and what kind of jobs and skills are suitalbe for youth/people facing different challenges in this often rural areas? And is the local economy absorbing these Youth/people looking for new livelihood? 19:03:19 From sam loumo : I understand Kyrgyzstan is one of the key players in the global mining industry with a lot of mineral deposits, I would like to understand the current state of pasture lands amidst artisanal or large scale mining activities 19:05:58 From Lolek Joseph : Thanks for sharing the Kyrgyzstan’s community-based pasture Management. (mining lollipops) 19:17:07 From sam loumo : Replying to "I understand Kyrgyzs..." Wow, Thanks for the feedback 19:19:14 From David Olwa : I do agree that eco restoration is a myth because it takes several years to develop the ecosystems( vegetation, trees, etc ) over a long period of time. Therefore it is simply impssible to restore in the shortest time as purported by the mining companies. 19:20:44 From Ashrah Shereni : Reacted to "I do agree that eco ..." with ❤️ 19:23:58 From Ute Schneiderat : Antworten an "I do agree that ec..." Dear David, most of the time there are rules and laws on rehabilitation and I would suggest not to give up to put pressure on the company to resorate mining areas after use or compensate the poeople, that they can do it by themselves. It might need long-term efford to work on it, but it is not impossible. Never give up, push in thr right direction, it is not impossible, but needs a lot of patience and enthusiasm. 19:25:53 From Fiona Underwood : Replying to "I understand Kyrgyzs..." Agree with comments raised in discussion. I found this was interesting about the impact of some specific mining on forests in Madagascar. Very surprising/controversial to get this result (researchers were independent) and specific to the situation there. I'm sending more because I think the methodology is useful to think about rather than actual results.... Madagascar’s mining rush has caused no more deforestation than farming – new study They have also looked at the impact of one large mine On track to achieve no net loss of forest at Madagascar’s biggest mine | Nature Sustainability 19:28:10 From Philippe Bertinchamps : Do the shepherds get support from the government in termes of salaries, social security and retirement fees when they get old - or they are left alone? 19:30:05 From sam loumo : Reacted to "Agree with comments ..." with 👏 19:30:25 From Ute Schneiderat : Antworten an "What is the compos..."
