Overgrazing general is a creation of restricted mobility, and also it is attributed to several factors such as loss of grazing land, population pressure and climate change. For example in Karamoja, concentration of pastoralists to nearby and few water points for about 220 days equivalent of 6 month leaves the grasslands around the particular landscape depleted. This is because the same areas are being maximized for grazing by different animals.

The compelling reasons behind over grazing in some areas I have worked over time include; high populations of livestock accessing same water and grazing points for several times, prolonged dry spells have kept pastoralists in same areas awaiting for a change in the status in the primary zone, land use conflicts such as those experienced by matheniko in Uganda related to land alienation for extractive industries and urban development, Most cross borders pastoralists are constricted to stay in one location due to insecurity resulting to loss of property.

The pasture biodiversity loss is as result of continuous access and use of same area same time with same number or increasing numbers of animals using same pastures over and over. The grazing causes compaction of soils around the grasslands in the vicinity of the water points, in places such as Lokisilei in Moroto district of Uganda because of continuous grazing their is a rise of invasive plants species that are equally poisonous to livestock and humans as a result of loss of vegetation cover in most landscapes, Loss of ecosystems function can cause nutrient and water and habitat structure loss.
